| Abstract | Examined a paradigm for testing classical achievement attribution models of achievement behavior in which overall performance consists of the sum of the performances on the subtasks in 2 studies. Study 1 (105 college students aged 19-62 years) was based on a 2 (pre- vs posttest) x 4 (realistic, unrealistically positive, unrealistically negative, and inverse information) experimental design with independent measures on the last factor. Data analyses revealed that participants who were induced to make realistic attributions spent more time on tasks for which they had demonstrated high ability than on tasks for which they had demonstrated low ability. Study 2 (31 college students aged 19-40 years), based on a 2 (pre- vs posttest) x 2 (realistic vs unrealistic [inverse] information) design with independent measures on the last factor, replicated the results of Study 1 and revealed better posttest performance for individuals receiving realistic feedback than for individuals receiving unrealistic feedback.
