Abstract | The author examines the strategies Ghana adopted to ensure gender equity in education during a World-Bank- sponsored structural adjustment program in 1986, and she also looks at the Girl's Education Unit as the kingpin of efforts to empower girls through education. Although the author comments the government's efforts, she also argues that the context of reform and the harsh economic realities resulting from adjustment were major limitation in girls' education during the period of structural adjustment. [The "structural adjustment" was "the package the World Bank presented to Ghana to forestall the country's economic deterioration and foster growth and national development."] (DIPF/Orig.) |
