| Abstract | The paper explores "the experience of economic transition in Viet Nam, with a particular focus on how the higher education system is coping with the changes taking place in society". First, this transition, introducing market economy elements, is described. Then an overview of the development of higher education is given up to the status of today. Finally, the implementation of 12 principal aims of higher education reforms proposed by the government is outlined using data from the literature. Interestingly it seems that in Viet Nam "the higher education system is simply having to deal with many of the issues that Western universities have entcountered in previous years" and it is not the economic transition that create all the problems of Viet Nam' s higher education.
