Abstract | Can we consider building a European identity through contents and practices which do away with or edge out the question of values? The task proves to be delicate and uncertain. More generally, it seems to be urgent to induce a reflexion on the potential contradictions between an academic functioning which tends to reify and neutralize knowledge, and the ambition to train active citizens. Moral values and civic awareness are not a knowledge that can be superimposed on an already encyclopaedic syllabus. Allowing them to emerge, to be debated, to be explicitely linked with history and geography (not only of Europe) may be an opportunity to give back to these subjects a social function opening up to future.
