| Abstract | The habits of intensive television viewing in Europe has strong influence on the development of European languages. Children in the Netherlands nowadays 'read' more television by seeing subtitles than they do by actually reading books. Research in Italy has revealed that the average vocabulary used in Italian dubbing consists of not more than 500 words, which will undoubtedly have its impact on the language skills Italian children will grow up with. Showing their concern about this, a group of higher education teachers interested in language transfer in the media from fifteen European universities agreed to set up an international association to be known as the European Association for Studies in Screen Translation (ESIST). The Association's scope of activity is to promote training and research in the field of interlingual screen translation and facilitate an exchange of information among teachers, trainers, practitioners, researchers, students and trainees in the field.
