| Abstract | The essay examines the ideological dimensions of the controversy surrounding the award of the 1991 Ingeborg-Bachmann-Prize Competition. Emine Sevgi Özdamar was the first non-native speaker of German to receive the award, one of the most important postwar prizes for literature written in German; she did so for an excerpt from Das Leben ist eine Karawanserei hat zwei Türen aus einer kam ich rein aus der anderen ging ich raus. This essay contrasts analyses of Özdamar's manuscript by literary critics during and following the competition with those of the second-prize text by native-speaker author, Urs Allemann. "German" literature is contested in the reviewers debate over whether Özdamar or Allemann should have won the Bachmann Prize when Özdamar's cultural difference is accentuated, rather than her more than twenty-year participation as actress, dramatist, and writer in culture made in (East and West) Germany.
