| Abstract | The author discusses the following problem: "Given the upgrade of industry and the complexity of the entire socio-economic situation. what is needed by Malawi is creation of adequate stock of high-level human resources imbued with a greater degree of comprehensive knowledge rather than mere vocational skills. Malawi has an abundance of labour resources to carry out basic operations, but lacks an adequate pool of intellectuals who are capable of confidently suggesting new and better ways of doing things. In this regard, sustainability of development in Malawi is more a function of producing a population which is adequately critical, inventive and creative in a situation of changing needs and practices than anything else".
