| Abstract | Analysis of two unusual educational programs in the United States (a remedial program in Army basic training portrayed in the film "Renaissance Man" and Jewish supplementary schooling) showed them both to suffer from a double disjuncture: a minority education program subordinate to a larger educational context, and misidentity as a program of formal education. Because of the disjunctures, both programs fall short of their educational goals, one of which was to inculcate group loyalty. ... However, improving the programs required moving beyond the classroom level, including a renegotiation of their status and a reconceptualization of their format and goals.
