| Abstract | At is broadest level, globalization refers to the description and explanation of social processes that transcend national borders. On the one hand, economic globalization stresses the imperatives of market competition and global capital in promoting a convergence of institutinal arrangements among core nations, and thus among education systems ... On the other hand, global rationalization, while not unrelated to economic imperatives, stresses the idea of a unitary cultural system. In this view, the nation-state model of social organization diffuses processes of rationalization and standardization.. . In this article we examine whether and how these two broad conceptions of globalization explain the coincident natur of recent reforms in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand... Our method is comparative and qualitative. Since one cannot adequately grasp the dynamics of coincident reforms with a single-nation case study, we highlight common processes across five nations.
