Abstract | This article is a brief survey of policy initiatives in vocational education and training in the Czech Republic. ... After a brief description of the mayor characteristics and developments of vocational education before and after 1989 the authors present a survey of four reform initiatives. A short assessment of the state of vocational education and training (VET) reform will be given, followed by an overall evaluation of the challenges for VET reform management at system level. The main argument is that VET policy-making has been very much restricted so far to solving school-based problems inherited by the past. Insufficient attention has been given to system-level changes and no attention at all to the future challenges for which Czech VET will have to find appropriate answers. While educational policy has largely concentrated on providing the political and financial conditions for schools to adapt to changing conditions, the experience of the last few years shows the need for greater coordination and strategic policy- making at regional and national levels with the participation of social partners and public administration.
