| Abstract | The article reports on the measurement methods and the results of the Morocco Literacy Survey from 1990/91 which was conducted in connection with the Living Standards Measurement Survey. The special quality of this survey was that "direct assessments of individual competencies across an array of skills" were applied. The sample comprised 2240 households (8050 persons) from seven economic regions of the country. Test issues were: competencies in Arabic reading, writing and information finding on common Arabic language documents (e.g. from identity cards or newspapers), French reading and writing and mental and written arithmetic. The detailed results revealed by this method are compared with the results of conventional self-report based studies. The authors analyse the results as to gender and environment factors, economic status, schoolong level and across age cohorts. They also show family patterns of literacy: literacy levels of husband and wife, of parent and child, mother's literacy and child's school attendance. (DIPF/Bi.) |
