Abstract | This article examines the manner in which national Chinese Universities are evolving as a result of an emerging free market economy. Organizational trends associated with societal transformation are identified. Trends discussed are: a) institutional consolidation resulting from the need to generate revenues; b) competition for admission into new disciplinary fields, and, c) the professionalization of faculty and demand for curricular relevancy. Key issues which have surfaced in response to these trends include: a) inter- and intra-institutional compedition due to revenue enhancing strategies; b) a realignment of Chinese academic insititutions with the free market, and c) political tension between the Central Party and academic interests.(DIPF/Abstract übernommen) |
