Abstract | Politicians and educators propose that adolescents growing up in increasingly globalized societies need to develop intercultural competence. However, empirical research on this issue is scarce. The overarching of this dissertation is to investigate the conditions under which students attending culturally diverse schools in Germany develop intercultural competence. Intercultural competence is conceptualized within cultural intelligence framework and is assumed to comprise motivation, cognitive, metacognitive, and behavioral components. Based on an integration of findings from social, developmental, and cross-cultural psychology, the author hypothesizes that developmental aspects, intercultural interactions, and active engagement with different perspectives are related to intercultural competence among adolescents.
