Abstract | The article explores benefits of the biological feedback (BFB) based methods applicable for the adaptive physical education of mentally retarded (intellectually impaired) children - one of the eight groups of children experiencing health impairments. It is the coordination disorders and imperfections of finely differentiated motor skills that comprise the main motor disorders in mentally retarded children. The BFB-based method is widely applied in medical practice by doctors of different specialties for treatment and rehabilitation of patients diagnosed with pathologies of nervous system and musculoskeletal disorders. Since the main objective of the BFB-based method is to help the patients obtain self-control skills, the relevant applied BFB technologies may be beneficial both for medical applications and for a variety of educational, health-protection, health-improvement and correction missions; and this is the reason for the BFB-based method being viewed and applied as an adaptive functionality bio-control method. However, the available practical experience of the BFB-based technologies application in educational projects is quite poor at the moment. On the other hand, the Republic of Mordovia has qualified, pursuant to the relevant orders of the Ministry of Sports of the RF, adaptive sports for intellectually retarded people among the core sport disciplines supported by the Republic, with the relevant physical education provisions for every relevant group of athletes including children. Successful practical foreign experience of the BFB technologies being applied for education purposes has encouraged the national enthusiasts to design and apply their own BFB-based systems in the adaptive physical education of mentally retarded children. The new BFB-based method applied in the mentally retarded children's education and rehabilitation systems with an emphasis on low retardation levels and junior school groups will help improve the efficiency of the standard Basic Adaptive Education Curriculum (BAEC) in the physical cultural component and, hence, the sport achievements of the mentally retarded junior athletes.
