| Abstract | This doctoral dissertation provides three contributions to the economics and econometrics of education. More specifically, based on data from the German Socio-economic Panel (SOEP), the papers are concerned with the estimation of qualification-specific wage premiums in Germany. Important aspects and particularities of the German educational system build the framework of analysis and provide additional perspectives with regard to the interpretation of hitherto not available return estimates and resulting policy implications. The first paper is concerned with the heterogeneity of vocational qualifications and corresponding differences in their returns. A specific focus lies on the apprenticeship system which has been increasingly criticized for its declining functional efficiency with respect to its absorptive capacity of lower level school leavers which may largely be due to the comparatively strong decline in craft apprenticeships.
