(Autorenreferat; BIBB-Doku). "Given the trend towards academicisation, and the increase in dual education and degree courses for employed students, and in view of the opening up of higher education to new groups, the gap is now narrowing between the previously distinct systems of vocational and higher education. However, applying the 'dual education principle' more broadly, to greater numbers of students, does not guarantee the same quality that is associated with initial vocational education and training under the dual system. The idea of 'hybrid' study formats at higher education institutions suggests that equal weight is given to practical vocational training at a company on the one hand, and academic, theoretical course work on the other. However, analysis of a sample group of eight STEM degree programmes for employed students showed that although these programmes claim to focus on practical application and career relevance, the claim does not live up to reality. The failure of the Accreditation Council to produce binding guidelines has led to a severe lack of transparency with regard to the design and quality of the course formats. This means that each provider is free to make decisions about the design, organisation and implementation of degree formats for employed students and, as a result, that some providers ignore the formal guidelines for admission to higher education and establish their own conditions for entrance examinations and the recognition of previous professional achievements relevant to the degree subject. This lack of regulation is leading to looser structures and a diversification of providers. This paper draws on empirical research to demonstrate how STEM degree formats for employed students are structured and organised, and which factors increase or decrease students' chances of successfully completing their degrees."
