Abstract | Raising any child is challenging for parents, but raising a gifted child can be especially demanding. Parents benefit from quality information about giftedness as well as effective parenting strategies for working with very bright youngsters. Parents may wish to better motivate their gifted children, helping them to take personal responsibility and encouraging social development. Through counseling, parents may learn to advocate effectively. Teachers do not necessarily have sufficient knowledge and understanding about gifted children. Sometimes traditional public schooling and homeschooling are combined in order to extend and enrich learning opportunities. Parents recognize that well designed programs are helpful to their child's overall development. Professional counselors and psychologists who specialize in gifted children are best qualified to design and conduct parent education. (ERIC). |
