AbstractReligious, moral and/or ethical beliefs often drive the mission of independent colleges, and independent colleges educate students from racial and ethnic minorities almost the same as at four-year state institutions. The proportion of low- and middle-income students at private colleges and universities is almost the same as at four-year state institutions. Even the mission of the Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education (AILACTE) is to focus teacher education on the moral dimensions of schooling and education. The Association encourages member institutions to emphasize: (1) the importance of individuals; (2) the importance of community; (3) the obligations that individuals have in community; (4) the role that individuals and communities have in a democratic society and; (5) the principle of equity of access to knowledge. In support of these principles of equity, this article seeks to do two things: (1) identify issues and challenges teacher educators face as they work to redesign programs to successfully prepare beginning educators for a diverse, just and equitable society; and (2) identify key recommendations for reform.
