AbstractWhen the author attended a "weekend" conference on the "Standards for the 21st-Century Learner", she was filled with uncertainty about the AASL standards and how to implement inquiry in her fixed-schedule environment. Her uncertainty grew as the presenters introduced themselves. However, her uncertainty began to subside as one of the presenters introduced the common beliefs underlying the standards. When she read "Guided Inquiry: Learning in the 21st Century," a book that explains Carol Kuhlthau's Information Search Process, a model that includes the feelings, thoughts, and actions of students involved in inquiry tasks, the author realized that she has been moving through Kuhlthau's stages of learning, beginning with her uncertainty at the Leadership Conference, and ending with her confidence in working with the standards. This article describes the author's journey toward inquiry and how she implemented the inquiry and standards in a fixed-schedule environment. With a series of small and thoughtful changes to what school librarians are already doing, the author stresses that they can move from optimistic uncertainty to a sense of accomplishment. (ERIC).
