AbstractChildhood obesity and inactivity levels among young Americans have risen steadily over the last few decades, and has become a major concern. Participation in regular physical activity helps prevent excess adiposity in children and youth. Recess is a regularly occurring period of time in school children's days which is an opportunity to help them discover enjoyable physical activities and increase their motivation to engage in more movement. When this "free choice" time period is overlooked, children may not form lifelong physical activity patterns that could prevent obesity. Recess Activity of the Week (RAW) is an approach that can motivate children to intrinsically engage in physical activity during their free time by allowing them opportunities to participate in movement experiences that promote a sense of competence, autonomy, and relatedness. RAWs are designed to provide children with an opportunity to choose a game or activity during their free time that helps develop healthy bodies. The RAWs are intended to provide elementary school children with opportunities to participate in activities that are not typically available during their recess time. This article provides a four-week description of a sample RAW program with a different activity featured each week. The activities serve as base-line suggestions to help elementary teachers develop RAWs that meet the needs and interests of children at their own schools. (Contains 1 table and 1 figure.) (ERIC).
