Abstract | The understanding of stress and burnout in camp counselors (Magnuson, 1992; Voekl, Austin, & Szymanski, 1985), teachers (Troman & Woods, 2001), and therapists (Maslach, 1976) has been commonly studied in the past. In contrast, the outdoor education industry has relied on anecdotal information when addressing the problems of stress, burnout, and personal difficulties as they relate to working in the field. This study identified the challenges that cause high turnover rate, stress, and burnout among field instructors of wilderness therapy, as well as propose possible solutions to alleviate these challenges. Emphasis was also placed on establishing demographics for this group of professionals. (Author). |
