Abstract | In this article, the authors propose to take advantage of detailed data on Egyptian public schools (grades 6-8, the last 3 years of the 8-year compulsory schooling sequence) that were collected in conjunction with a national survey of Egyptian adolescents. The school data were collected in a subsample of the primary sampling units used for the adolescent survey. Using data from both the adolescent and school surveys, the authors explore statistically the relationship between various dimensions of school quality at the preparatory level and the likelihood of exit from the formal schooling system either (1) before the end of preparatory school or (2) before the completion of secondary school. They begin with a review of the literature on school quality and returns to schooling and then present some background information on the specific situation of schooling in Egypt before introducing their data and providing some descriptive background on various dimensions of school quality. Throughout, the authors analyze outcomes separately for boys and girls, allowing for the possibility that effects of school quality may differ by gender. (Contains 3 figures, 4 tables, 56 footnotes, and an appendix entitled "Dimensions of School Quality, Egypt, 1998."] (ERIC). |
