AbstractIn this article, the author profiles Dr. Tony Martin, a historian who has spent 34 years teaching at Wellesley College, a small all-female school in Wellesley, Massachusetts. While he wishes to be remembered in his role as a prolific scholar of Marcus Garvey, the public knows him mostly as a controversial figure--his much smaller body of work on the history of Jews in the slave trade has led to denunciations from national Jewish organizations, clashes between Martin and Wellesley classics professor Mary Lefkowitz, the allegedly unfair denial of a merit raise, and two unsuccessful libel suits. This article discusses that controversy, Martin's reaction to it, and the more pleasant memories of the Black women he has mentored during his time at Wellesley. (ERIC).
