Abstract	It has been reported that science has gone through an institutional crisis and that science in Russia as a whole has been deinstitutionalized. This article is an attempt to make use of the example of scientific organizations in St. Petersburg in order to trace the changes that have been going on in science in the past few years as a result of economic changes. The analysis is based on the materials of a number of sociological surveys conducted in St. Petersburg at the end of the 1990s, with the participation of the authors. The authors focus on changes in the academic and sectoral branches of science during the reforms, as well as on the processes of scientists' adaptation to the new conditions. Among the findings gathered by the authors include: (1) Regarding the causes of the difficult situation in science, respondents tend to blame not science but society, policies that have led to the decline of the social status of science and the scientist; (2) Among the institutional changes that have had an effect on academic science a special place is held by the rise and development of Russian science foundations; (4) A characteristic feature of today's academic science community is the high rate of actual and potential international migration of scientists; and (4) One of the most basic manifestations of the transformation of academic science has to do with the creation of small enterprises within academic institutes.
