Abstract | In this paper, the authors explore the potential of garlic ("Allium sativum L.") to illustrate the concept of allelopathy and demonstrate the biological activity of plant volatiles. This article describes several classroom experiments involving garlic that can be used as a method of introducing students of various ages to the following important concepts: (1) allelopathy (any direct or indirect harmful or beneficial effect of one plant on another); (2) the significance of plant volatiles; (3) plants as a source of medicinal and other bioactive compounds; (4) the nature and use of a bioassay; and (5) principles of experimental design.
