AbstractCooking, sewing, baby-sitting, and storytelling are all units included in Family and Consumer Science classes. This article describes a lesson designed by a consumer science teacher to incorporate media skills into some of these units. The library media specialist and the classroom teacher collaborated on the development of the instructional strategy, which was planned carefully and resulted in a valuable lesson for the students as well as a local elementary school that was included in the mix. The lesson was designed to develop literary skills by reviewing children's picture books. Students would read, write, and edit children's books. In addition, students were involved in the development of the artistic components. They illustrated the books, created puppets, and demonstrated performance proficiency. As the project was being developed, an administrator of a local elementary school was contacted to determine interest in elementary students visiting the library media center to view the books and puppet show projects. Following these visits, the elementary school students followed up on the project by creating their own stories and puppet shows and inviting middle school students to view their performances. All students were totally involved in the project, and both the audiences and the performers learned valuable lessons. (ERIC).
