Abstract | Discusses traditional Native American respect for self-determination, both for individuals and collectivities, and implications for defining intellectual sovereignty. Suggests that Native American studies must pursue an integrated holistic study of ancient American history from an indigenous perspective to counter distorted colonialist interpretations and must evolve into a comprehensive discipline encompassing all aspects of indigenous life and thought.
