Abstract | Today's teachers want to capture their learners' attention and strengthen their knowledge, skills, and dispositions "to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world." Social studies class can become the place and time where young learners begin to experience competence as they grapple with complex and controversial issues. Current events provide information that matters and is happening now, in their world. In this article, the authors discuss how featuring current events in the classroom can produce four desirable outcomes. Each of these outcomes contributes to strengthening "good citizenship," as young learners comprehend "that their actions can make a difference" locally and globally. Teachers can meet the challenge of connecting young learners with current events and promoting civic engagement by studying (and not turning away from) natural disasters when they are reported in the news.
