Abstract | For many decades, children and adolescents have had a deficient level of health-related fitness knowledge (HRFK). This is worrisome, since HRFK acquisition has been found to be fundamental for individuals' decision-making as it relates to healthy living. Consequently, Knowledge in Action (KIA) fitness was developed to offer elementary teachers an effective HRFK instructional tool that can be implemented during physical education class. With the use of a four-station lesson design, KIA fitness takes no more than 10 minutes to complete and aligns directly with the National Standards. The effectiveness of the newly developed program was examined in a large-scale intervention study, and the researchers found that the KIA fitness lessons significantly raised students' pre and post HRFK scores by 20% while maintaining high physical activity levels. This article describes how this method or similar programs can help combat students' lack of physical activity and increase teacher effectiveness during limited class time. (As Provided). |
