| Abstract | Most district and school leaders understand that recruiting group members who have differing backgrounds, perspectives, talents, and personalities makes for good decision-making. Unfortunately, simply assembling a variety of top-notch individuals does not necessarily mean their talents and perspectives will be fully considered. Beth Strathman presents four symptoms that teams are making use of their talents and solutions for each. The team is mired down in confusion. The leader can prevent this by clearly explaining why the group was formed and why each member was selected to participate. Discussions turn into personal attacks. Teams can prevent this by establishing and enforcing norms for productive discussion. Members have offline discussions about issues best addressed by the whole group. Group members need to hold each other accountable for bringing up their concerns at the meeting. Discussions are lackluster. Leaders and group members should ask questions that bring depth to others' ideas and draw out divergent views. (As Provided). |
