Abstract | The new Next Generation Science Standards make it a priority for schools to focus more on the E in STEM, to help students learn the skills and practices of engineering. Schools that are doing so face a challenge, however: How to design educational experiences in engineering that engage all students--including girls and minorities, who are underrepresented in engineering fields and are often put off by the competitive, decontextualized way engineering projects are presented. Drawing on their experience developing the Boston Museum of Science's "Engineering is Elementary" curriculum, the authors outline six principles that help teachers design and teach engineering in a way that draws in all kids: (1) set engineering in a real-world context; (2) highlight how engineers help others; (3) construct activities with multiple solutions; (4) value failure; (5) foster collaboration; and (6) use readily-available materials. They describe activities connected to their curriculum in action in real K-12 classrooms. (As Provided). |
