AbstractPublic education has evolved throughout the years, whereas traditional school settings focused on students sitting quietly in the classroom waiting for instructions from their teachers who orchestrated the lessons and procedures for running the classroom. Although student voice always existed, it was often overlooked. For the most part, emphasis was placed on a top-down approach where school officials maintained the primary power of making decisions to resolve significant school issues or problems that required immediate attention. As the democratic rights and voices of students became a critical component for developing strategic plans designed to assist students with their academic growth and social development, the approach for addressing the needs of students reverted to a bottom-up approach. Students' voices have become a vital entity whereby school officials have acknowledged the extreme importance of giving students the opportunity to have a voice in making decisions pertaining to school matters of importance and to their academic success. While schools have made strides to promote student voice, resistance to the phenomenon remains a challenge that threatens the heart of a school's culture. This study explores how student voice can shape school culture through the evolution of theoretical perspectives emphasizing leadership theory and Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory.
