AbstractToday students confront more than writing, reading, and arithmetic in school. Students witness and participate in various forms of bullying at an alarming rate. As educators we must help create an environment that is conducive for all students to learn, and to fully understand and address the problem of bullying in the schools, we must first understand what students perceive to be bullying. This study examines college students' definitions and perceptions of incidents of bullying that they witnessed or experienced during their K-12 schooling. Through a survey of 300 college students and 41 in-depth interviews of participants who had experience with bullying, based off of the results of those surveys, the researcher found several themes in the data, one of which is the focus for this manuscript -- reasons students bully. In the larger study there were several themes, but the focus of this study is on the role clothing plays in bullying. Over half of the participants discussed clothing as a reason that they, or others, were bullied in school. Some participants recalled how the treatment they received in school changed when they started wearing name brands. Other participants mentioned how the shoes they or someone else wore to school made them the victim of bullying. Educators are dealing with bullying at all levels and understanding what may lead to bullying can help them address and hopefully reduce incidents of bullying. This insight can also prove valuable to teacher educators as they train those about to enter the classroom. To explore this theme more thoroughly, the research question for this study was: What role does clothing play in incidents of bullying in schools? (As Provided).
