AbstractThe purpose of this action research study was to increase the success of commuter students at my institution by creating an on-campus space designed to increase students' sense of community and meet their practical needs. Scholarly research by Scheriner (2010b) on social connectedness and Lounsbury and DeNeui (1996) on collegiate psychological sense of community formed the conceptual framework for increasing sense of community as a path to commuter student success. Additionally, the work of Maslow (1943) on the hierarchy of human needs formed the conceptual framework for addressing practical needs as a path to commuter student success. A dedicated on-campus commuter space was created for the purpose of positively influencing students' sense of community and practical needs. The results revealed that the creation of a commuter space decreased the unmet practical needs of commuter students. Additionally, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between the commuter student's frequency of visiting the commuter space and collegiate psychological sense of community scores. The implications of this research support the use of physical space to increase sense of community and meet practical needs of commuter students.
