AbstractWith the largest incarcerated population in the world, the United States has an urgent but unmet need for a correctional nurse workforce that is prepared with effective, evidence-based (EBP) care-strategies especially focused towards violence and sexual abuse mitigation. Standardized, proactive orientation and education processes within the world of corrections has been called for by researchers and clinicians for several years. Less than optimal educational support for veteran, new, and student nurses involved with incarcerated individuals allows for less than optimal inmate/patient outcomes and decreased interest and longevity of correctional nurse careers. With the advent of the Prison Rape Elimination ACT (PREA) federally mandated in 2012, an opportunity to affect change in prison culture became more readily available to professional nurses. Utilizing the Johns Hopkins Nursing Process and conceptual model for Evidence Based Practice, a practice improvement project was developed focusing on BSN students entering a correctional environment for the first time. Multifocal education, orientation, and support was provided, with a focus on violence awareness and PREA education. Data collection and examination measured outcomes and feasibility. An impact analysis of the projected social, economic, and environmental value of the program was incorporated utilizing a Donabedian framework and the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) Six Aims for Improvement and Quality (2001) guidelines. Targeted EBP-based learning experiences for student correctional nurses supported effective inmate/nurse interaction, improved inmate outcomes, health awareness, effective sexual violence awareness mitigation strategies, and empowered, motivated nurses ready to be change-agents for the field of correctional-forensic nursing.
