AbstractThis dissertation undertakes an analysis of 1,044 performance evaluations from New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Spring Festival solo adjudication ratings of student performers from a large suburban school district. It relies on results of evaluations of observed performances, and takes these evaluations as assessments of what the student performers know and are able to do in this field. The analyses undertaken in this study seek to uncover patterns in performance ratings by identified conditions of performance (time of day of performance, level of music performed, and performance medium) and characteristics of performers (gender, race/ethnicity, and grade level). The research questions focus on associations between performance scores and conditions of performance and characteristics of performers. There are three research questions: 1) Are the conditions of performance (time of day, level of performance, and performance medium) associated with overall NYSSMA rating in solo music performance?, 2) Are the characteristics of performers (gender, race/ethnicity, and grade level) associated with overall NYSSMA rating in solo music performance?, and 3) To what extent do conditions of performance and characteristics of performers predict performance scores? The sample includes only evaluations of solo instrumental and vocal performances. For each performance evaluation, information on the characteristics of the student performer was merged in the database. The study adopts simple descriptive and multi-variate analytical methods to examine patterns of external evaluations of observed student music performances by expert raters. A first and major result of the study is the creation of the NYSSMA database. A second major finding of this study is that identified and measured conditions of performance and characteristics of performers appear to be associated with differences in NYSSMA ratings. Taken together, all conditions and characteristics, including measures that take into account performances by students who participated in more than one festival over the four years covered in the study and the year of the festival, "explain" less than a quarter of the variation in performance ratings. Although not large, the estimate of variance explained is significant and important. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
