Abstract | This report discusses concerns that the future of the UK's world class research base might be threatened by the decline in modern language learning and calls for a series of measures by Universities and Government bodies to address this danger. It investigates evidence for the role of language skills in academic research in the humanities and social sciences in UK universities. The study generated a number of findings about the relationship between skills in languages other than English and postgraduate research in the humanities and social sciences in the UK. Findings are summarized in tabular format, including strength of supporting evidence, and approximate fit of evidenced findings to the organisations who have responsibilities for/or interests in those issues. The authors advocate further investigation in relation to: (1) evidence on demand for researchers with language skills; and (2) evidence about the causes and consequences of any mismatches between supply and demand. Three appendices are included: (1) Methodology; (2) Persons and organisations consulted; and (3) Languages needed for PhD research. (Contains 63 footnotes, 13 figures, and 16 tables.)
