AbstractThis paper is a byproduct of research started in 1982, suggested to the author through reading "Students into Teachers" (Collins, 1969). No similar study had been carried out in Papua New Guinea (PNG) so this study was designed to find out more about the social background, motivations and conditions of new teachers there. In countries such as the United Kingdom, U.S.A., Canada, Australia and New Zealand the topic is very well researched, but in Third World countries there is very little research data about new teachers. The idealism of PNG tyro teachers became apparent to the author in analyzing the research of the main project and evidence of the considerable degree of idealism that these young teachers possessed. It was concluded that young Papua New Guineans are idealistic and those who take up teaching as a career are particularly idealistic. They generally work hard in difficult conditions for low pay but remain optimistic about their chosen profession. (Contains 2 tables.)
