AbstractThe block scheduling program used in a high school in a small Midwestern city was evaluated, considering the "hard" data of effects on grade point average (GPA) and attendance, but not information about student attitudes and perceptions. Data were available for approximately 500 students from the classes of 1997 (before the block scheduling), 2000, 2001, and 2001. The relationship between block scheduling and cumulative GPA was not significant, but there was a significant positive relationship in terms of the four individual subject areas. Data suggested that block scheduling had an influence on passage of the Ohio Proficiency Test (OPT) for those students who did not pass the test before starting high school. Trends relating block scheduling to attendance were not clear. Also studies was the relationship between participating in the school band and student grades. The relationship was significant in mathematics, English, and social studies, but not in science. The block schedule did not appear to affect this relationship, and the relationship between participating in band and passing the OPT was a matter of chance. All the data that were significant were supportive of block scheduling, but not all data were significant. Six appendixes contain tables of study data. (SLD)
