AbstractThis booklet discusses how to develop successful substitute teachers, explaining that most substitutes do not receive the respect necessary to be effective. School districts must take such steps as adopting fair substitute hiring practices, allowing for the regular placement of substitutes in the same school over the year, and including substitutes in service awards. Principals must take such steps as understanding challenges that substitutes face, ensuring that substitutes feel welcome, and ensuring that teachers leave lesson and seating plans. Teachers must take such steps as explaining to students and parents that substitutes have authority and require respect; allowing substitutes to teach and use their own innovations; and fostering collegiality. Three checklists that teachers may use in working with substitutes highlight: planning ahead for unexpected absences, communicating about planned absences, and planning for special needs substituting. Responsibilities of substitute teachers include: showing school personnel, students, and parents that they are as professional as any teacher; doing their best work; and interacting with parents. Steps that substitutes can take in advocating for professionalism include: talking to principals and teachers about regard, authority, and collegiality; participating in teacher associations on substitute-related issues; and becoming more aware of professional responsibilities.
