Abstract | This booklet examines principles for effective tutoring. An introduction defines tutoring. Ten sections present research findings and practical applications. Section 1, "Real-Life Goals," includes making consistent, regular time; targeting real- life goals; and exploring understanding. Section 2, "Question and Prompt," discusses avoiding lectures, reviewing, concentrating, questioning, thinking, and prompting. Section 3, "Check and Correct Answers," includes observing tutee performance, error checking, promoting self-correction, intervening, and ensuring correct correction. Section 4, "Discuss and Praise," emphasizes discussing, praising, knowing when to praise, praising effectively, summarizing, and reviewing. Section 5, "Reading: Support and Review," discusses selecting materials, reading together, correcting errors, pausing, reading alone, continuing, praising, and reviewing. Section 6, "Writing: Map and Edit," includes generating ideas, mapping ideas, drafting, reading, editing, best copy, and evaluating. Section 7, "Mathematics: Make it Real and Summarize," highlights listening, reading, questioning, thinking aloud, making it real, checking, praising, encouraging, summarizing, and generalizing. Section 8, "Recruit and Match Partners," includes parental agreement, stating clear goals, considering personalities, and handling absence. Section 9, "Provide Training and Materials," includes specifying tutoring method, training in tutoring skills, and contracting. Section 10, "Monitor and Give Feedback," includes monitoring goals, self-help guide, self-referral, self-recording, discussion, and observation. (Contains 32 references.) (SM) |
