Abstract | Increasingly, it is recognized that accreditation by a nationally reputed accreditation association can improve the delivery of quality child care services through compliance with nationally recognized standards of best practice. This report examines the accreditation processes of four nationally recognized organizations: (1) National Association for the Education of Young Children; (2) National Early Childhood Program Accreditation system; (3) National Association for Family Child Care; and (4) Council of Accreditation for Services to Families and Children. The report compares the process by which accreditation is achieved for each organization and the standards by which each organization measures quality to grant accreditation. The report also summarizes research on the impact of accreditation on the improvement of quality service delivered over time. In addition, the report examines early childhood program standards that have had the greatest impact on early childhood education. It is organized into seven major sections to cover the following topics: (1) introduction; (2) overview on early childhood program accreditation process; (3) licensing and funding in relationship to accreditation; (4) descriptions of four early childhood accreditation processes; (5) comparison of the four accreditation processes; (6) review of the standards of the Child Welfare League of America, American Public Health Association/American Academy of Pediatrics, Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale, and Head Start; and (7) discussion of the strengths and limitations of various accreditation approaches. The report concludes by noting that each of the accreditation processes examined is substantially similar. (KB) |
