Abstract	This guide is designed to help teachers develop an inquiry-oriented program for studying the animal kingdom in which live animals are collected locally, studied, observed, and then released completely unharmed back into their natural habitats. This book addresses such concerns of life science teachers as the environmental soundness of methods and materials for studying the animal kingdom, possible exposure to harmful chemicals in preservatives, legal or moral challenges to life science curricula that include dissection, shrinking science budgets, lack of space or equipment needed to maintain permanent collections of animals, knowledge of where to collect live animals, and lack of time to collect and maintain live animals. The activities can be adapted to a wide range of ages and learning abilities. Each chapter investigates a major phylum of the animal kingdom and is divided into sections on classification, structure and habitat, collection of specimens, health and safety issues, teaching activities, and release of specimens. The chapters are arranged beginning with those animal groups simplest in structure and progressing to groups with more complex structure. Appendices contain a guide to classification, commercial suppliers of live animals, wildlife and natural resource authorities, state departments of education and health, and additional resources.
