Abstract | This study tested whether the attitudes of 153 undergraduate women, students at Chadron State College (Nebraska), toward mathematics would predict the math-relatedness of their chosen college majors. In particular the study examined the students' confidence in learning mathematics, perceived mothers' attitudes toward the student as a learner of mathematics, perceived fathers' attitudes toward the student as a learner of mathematics, attitude toward success in mathematics, perception of mathematics as a male domain, and perceived usefulness of mathematics. All students were volunteers, 19 years or older and enrolled in general studies classes. Using six of the Fennema-Sherman mathematics Attitudes Scales intermixed into one instrument, scores were correlated with the math-relatedness of each college major listed by the participants. Math-relatedness was defined using a scale developed for the study. Multiple regression analysis revealed only one scale (usefulness of mathematics) that significantly predicted the math-relatedness of college major choice although Pearson product-moment correlations generally supported the hypothesized correlations of the attitudinal scales with math-relatedness. Appendixes contain forms and instruments from the study. (Contains 32 references.) (JB) |
