Abstract | This paper summarizes findings of the National Education Commission on Time and Learning (NECT&L), which conducted a comprehensive review of the relationship between time and learning in elementary-secondary education. The first section highlights salient research findings. The following sections provide information on these topics: general thinking about time and learning; the length of the academic day and year; time for academic subjects; incentives and motivation; students' time outside of school; homework; the professional development of teachers; school facilities; a model for year-round education (YRE); costs and spending in education; and changes in laws and regulations regarding YRE.
