Abstract | This paper gives the reader some insight into the development and uses of one approach to school self-evaluation in Scottish schools. It first gives some history and background of the Scottish education system and its educational "glasnost." Following this is an explanation of the development of an approach to self-evaluation as a basis for school improvement and of the process that a project development team follows. The paper examines, discusses, and critically evaluates the materials and their uses. Examples of survey questions and responses to gain the perspectives of parents, pupils, teachers, and administrators are used to illustrate the evaluation process and methodology. The paper critically evaluates the process of undertaking the self-evaluation to ensure that respondents are fully informed of why the survey is being conducted, what is to be done with the information, and the confidentiality of the responses. The paper concludes by briefly summarizing issues in conducting self-evaluations. (RR) |
