| Abstract | According to participants at a conference on a more productive work force, the United States faces many challenges in the workplace. The workplace is changing rapidly, responding to technological advances, and facing increased global competition. Change is the norm, and the United States' competitive advantage increasingly will depend on the creation of value-added products and services. A value-added economy, in turn, demands higher-order skills of its workers. However, the work force is shrinking and aging, and most new workers will soon be minorities or females. In addition, there is little coordination between business and postsecondary institutions and many overlapping or gapping training programs are provided. Some of the solutions are to: (1) view learning as an uninterrupted process; (2) focus on individuals, not institutions; (3) build demand-driven systems and raise standards; and (4) increase public and private investments in postsecondary education. The future depends on how these solutions are implemented. It will take years, but the success of the country will be measured by the outcomes of these initiatives.
