| Abstract | Using conversational analytic techniques, a study examined how and where editors placed news stories on the inner pages of newspapers. The editors of a Midwestern afternoon newspaper (30,000 circulation) with a strong liberal/progressive tradition had 10 of their conferences taped and transcribed. The transcripts were analyzed to isolate those regular, recurring features of the story descriptions that include both describing newsworthiness categories and looking for places where editors directly orient to these categories. Results indicated that editors systematically used four major criteria in news placement: (1) proximity; (2) conflict; (3) impact; and (4) definiteness. Findings suggest that editors' sense-making practices allow them to preserve the ideology of objective news judgment in placing stories, while obscuring representational biases in the story selection.
