Abstract | This manual is designed to provide school administrators, child abuse designees, and other personnel with the information necessary to: (1) identify children who may be abused and/or neglected; (2) report suspected cases to the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services; (3) comply with child protective investigations; (4) provide supportive services to meet the needs of maltreated children within a school setting; (5) make referrals for students and families to programs and outside agencies as appropriate; and (6) obtain resources and assistance within the school district to help personnel fulfill above responsibilities. The manual is divided into five main sections. The first section discusses identification. The second section discusses reporting and compliance, including a reporting guide, the school board mandatory reporting policy, taking a child into custody, and interviewing on school grounds. The third section focuses on supportive services, including impairments of maltreated children, specific supportive services, the process of developing supportive services, and final outcomes. The fourth section discusses training, including goals and objectives, the Children Who Hurt Cannot Learn Series, and audiovisual materials. The last section describes additional resources related to reporting, support groups, shelters, prevention, counseling, and the school district. The appendix includes the relevant Florida statute and personal safety curriculum training guides for elementary and secondary students. (ABL) |
