AbstractTwo sixth-grade, hearing-impaired students were studied to determine the effectiveness of stress management techniques using biofeedback instruments to monitor their nervous and cardiovascular systems. The male student had behavior problems, exhibiting explosive behavior without warning. The female student experienced excessive audible inhalations during reading recitations and expressive language-producing situations. The students were taught appropriate breathing techniques, self-regulatory skills for skin temperature feedback and charting, relaxation training, and use of galvanic skin resistance electrodermal response instruments. Results of the project showed that stress management training using biofeedback can be successfully implemented with hearing-impaired students. The male student improved his conduct ratings from unsatisfactory to satisfactory, and the female student's inhalations were decreased to within the normal range. Other project goals, which were achieved to varying degrees, included decreasing self-reported stress, improving self-image, decreasing electrodermal responses, and increasing average peripheral temperatures to the normal range.
